"TRULLIS" ORIGINS

The "Trullis or truddhu" ( originally called by the popular pronunciation and the period goes back to the prehistoric). Through the millennial the structure changed from a simple shelter to a true house. The diffusion of the " Trullis" was possible only in the areas where the grounds were rich of calcareous stones necessary to built the " Trullis". The territories , the grounds are full of these stones and for the cultivation they must be took away. So the stones are heap up and utilized for the building of the " Trullis" or for the wallpen. Originally the "Trullis" was a simple cone-shaped drywall hut . Then they built windows, a cistern under the "Trulli" to pick up and to keep the rain water.
The circular shape became a square shape and they began to build more "trullis" one next to another in order to have a real house.

They began to plaster them inside and introduced any shelves inside in order to become more comfortable. The evolution of the "Trullis" is to be link to the settling of the population of the first '900.

They first lived in the centre of the city because for the raising prices of the agricultural grounds . So they had to work for many hours in the land and the "trullis " began to be their home. The " Trulli" is composed by 2 important structural elements: the base with circular or square shape and the vault.

The base is built by drystones laid one upon the other in order to built a vertical wall which will give the place to the vault. The vault of the "Trulli " called even " Cannela" is built by a series of concentrics rings laid one upon the other in a horizontal way. Once a time the first ring is built the other comes easily but they becomes smaller and the last stone which will close the little hole is called : the " serraglia".

The covering is called a "chiancarelle" ( typical white drystones) . This kind of covering is very useful for the draining of the rain water. The little hat on the top of the "Trullis" has its origin from the oriental cult which was based on the adoration of the blue stones which were daughters of the sun and of the stars because they were fallen down from the sky. We can assert that the "trullis" are immortal after they were built and is now considered the original architectonic espression and now used as vacation house.
